A method for the mapping of conceptual designs to logical blueprints for ETL processes

چکیده
Extraction–Transformation–Loading (ETL) tools are pieces of software responsible for the extraction of data from several sources, their cleansing, customization and insertion into a data warehouse. In previous work, we presented a modeling framework for ETL processes comprised of a conceptual model that concretely deals with the early stages of a data warehouse project, and a logical model that deals with the definition of data-centric workflows. In this paper, we describe the mapping of the conceptual model to the logical model. First, we identify how conceptual entities are mapped to logical entities. Next, we determine the execution order in the logical workflow using information adapted from the conceptual model. Finally, we provide a method for the transition from the conceptual model to the logical model. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes are widely used in Data Warehousing in order to extract, cleanse and load data into a centralized location for better analysis and decision-making. As users become more demanding for on-line decision making, ETL processes grow large and more complex. Most processes are deployed at the physical level without any abstraction, thus costs of maintenance a...

Extraction-Transformation-Loading (ETL) tools are pieces of software responsible for the extraction of data from several sources, their cleansing, customization and insertion into a data warehouse. The design, development and deployment of ETL processes, which is currently, performed in an ad-hoc, in house fashion, needs modeling, design and methodological foundations. Unfortunately, the resear...
متن کاملGEM: Requirement-Driven Generation of ETL and Multidimensional Conceptual Designs
At the early stages of a data warehouse design project, the main objective is to collect the business requirements and needs, and translate them into an appropriate conceptual, multidimensional design. Typically, this task is performed manually, through a series of interviews involving two different parties: the business analysts and technical designers. Producing an appropriate conceptual desi...
متن کاملEMD: entity mapping diagram for automated extraction, transformation, and loading processes in data warehousing
During the last few years, researchers and developers had proposed various trials to put a standard conceptual design of ETL processes in data warehouse. These trials try to represent the main mapping activities at the conceptual level. Due to limitations of the previous trials, in this paper 1 We propose a model for conceptual design of ETL processes and we call it entity mapping diagram (EMD)...
متن کاملLeveraging Business Process Models for ETL Design
As Business Intelligence evolves from off-line strategic decision making to on-line operational decision making, the design of the back-end Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) processes is becoming even more complex. Many challenges arise in this new context like their optimization and modeling. In this paper, we focus on the disconnection between the IT-level view of the enterprise presented by ETL p...
